Why screen size, distance and resolution matter

Why physical size matters

A diagonal hides the number you actually live with, which is width. A 27 inch 16:9 panel is 59.8 cm of glass and about 61 cm of body — roughly half of a 120 cm desk. A 34 inch ultrawide at the same nominal “seven inches bigger” is 79.6 cm wide, two thirds of that desk, and it will not leave room for a laptop beside it. The jump from 27 to 32 inches adds 11 cm of width and 6 cm of height, which is the difference between a monitor that sits behind your keyboard and one that fills the wall behind it. DisplayScale works in centimetres on the surface you actually own, and draws the result at true scale, because a number in a spec sheet and a shape on your desk are not the same thing.

Why viewing distance matters

The same screen is a different screen at a different distance. A 27 inch fills about 49° of your field of view from 65 cm and about 35° from 95 cm — comfortable in the first case, a little narrow in the second. Desk work sits well around 42–56° across; gaming wants 48–64° and films 50–66°, and past about 60° you are turning your head rather than your eyes. A television is the same problem at larger numbers: a 65 inch at 2.5 m is about 32° across, which is why a “too small” verdict on a 43 inch in a big lounge is really about the room, not the television. Distance decides whether a size feels right as much as the size does.

Why resolution matters

Sharpness is pixels per degree, not pixels. 1440p at 27 inches is 109 pixels per inch, which is sharp for text at desk distance; the same 2560×1440 stretched to 32 inches is 92 PPI and visibly softer from the same chair. It works the other way too: move far enough back and extra pixels stop being visible at all. At 2.5 m a 55 inch 1080p panel is already past the point where most people can resolve individual pixels, so 4K buys very little — and DisplayScale says so on the results panel rather than letting you assume more is always better. What resolution you need is a function of size and distance together, never of size alone.

How DisplayScale recommends

Every candidate size is scored on four things and the weighting depends on what you said you do. Fit asks whether it physically works on your surface, and rules out anything that does not with the exact shortfall. Viewing and immersion measure the angle it subtends against the range that suits the task. Ergonomics and comfort check that you are not looking up at it or sitting too close. Sharpness uses pixels per degree. The output is a ranked list with its reasons in plain language, never a single “correct” answer — the sizes near the top are usually all defensible, and the layout is what decides between them.
